Design Guide
Design Advice
- Supports as Heat Sinks: In SLM, supports act as critical heat sinks to dissipate intense laser heat. Design parts with overhang angles greater than 45° to minimize supports, and ensure thick sections are anchored to the build plate to prevent warping.
- Self-Supporting Internal Channels: For internal cooling channels or holes larger than 8 mm, use teardrop or diamond shapes instead of circular ones. This geometry allows the feature to be self-supporting, ensuring easy removal of unfused powder.
- Minimum Wall Thickness & Fillets: Maintain a minimum wall thickness of 0.5 mm for functional features. Avoid sharp internal corners by adding fillets (minimum R 0.5 mm) to distribute stress and prevent cracks caused by rapid heating cycles.

What’s SLM 3D Printing?
SLM (Selective Laser Melting) is a metal 3D printing process that uses a high-power laser to fully melt metal powder layer by layer, directly forming fully dense, high-strength metal parts with precise geometries. It enables the production of complex internal structures and lightweight designs that are difficult or impossible to achieve with traditional manufacturing.
Advantages of SLM 3D Printing
Online SLM 3D printing service has many advantages over traditional methods:
- High-strength functional metal parts: Produces fully dense components with mechanical properties comparable to traditionally manufactured metal parts.
- Complex geometries & internal features: Supports intricate lattices, conformal cooling channels, and undercuts that cannot be made with CNC machining or casting.
- High material efficiency: Only the required material is melted, minimizing waste; unused powder can often be recycled.
- Fast lead times for low-volume production: Eliminates the need for expensive tooling, making it ideal for rapid prototyping and on-demand metal parts.
SLM 3D Printing Applications
Our online SLM 3D printing services offers a wide range of applications for different types of parts:
- Aerospace & defense: Lightweight structural brackets, turbine components, and heat exchangers.
- Medical & dental: Custom titanium orthopedic implants and patient-specific dental prosthetics.
- Automotive: High-performance engine parts, lightweight brackets, and conformal cooling molds.
- Industrial tooling: Conformal cooling inserts for injection molds and custom jigs for manufacturing lines.
