How We Control Slender and Small Parts

Slender and miniature parts are sensitive to cutting pressure, heat, vibration, and tool wear. Yongshuo adjusts the support, tooling, cutting parameters, and inspection plan around each part’s geometry to prevent these risks from affecting the finished components.

Part Bending or Deflection

Long, narrow parts may bend under cutting force, causing diameter variation or poor straightness. We support the material close to the cutting point and control cutting loads to keep the part stable throughout machining.

Inspection for Swiss Machined Parts

Swiss machined components often combine small diameters, slender profiles, micro-features, and closely related front, side, and back details. Our inspection plan is built around these characteristics, verifying the feature relationships that determine whether each part will fit and function correctly.

  1. Small Diameters & Micro-Features

Optical systems verify small diameters, micro holes, narrow grooves, and edge details.

  2. Straightness, Roundness & Runout

We check straightness, roundness, diameter consistency, and runout on slender parts.

  3. Concentricity & Feature Alignment

We verify opposite-end concentricity and the position of cross-machined features.

  4. Threads, Bores & Mating Features

Gauges and optical methods confirm threads, bores, tapers, and sealing fits.

  5. Production Drift Control

Scheduled checks detect tool wear and prevent dimensional drift during production.

Is Swiss Machining Right for Your Part?

Swiss CNC machining is best suited to small-diameter, slender, or feature-rich parts that are difficult to produce consistently with conventional turning. Use the guide below to determine which process better fits your part.

Swiss CNC Machining

Choose Swiss Machining When

  • The part is long or slender and requires support close to the cutting area.
  • Critical diameters, threads, holes, and grooves must remain accurately aligned.
  • Turning, milling, drilling, threading, or back-side features are required on one part.
  • Multiple setups could increase dimensional variation or extend lead time.
  • Repeat orders require consistent dimensions from batch to batch.
Conventional CNC Turning

Conventional CNC Turning May Be Better When

  • The part is short, rigid, or relatively large in diameter.
  • The geometry mainly consists of simple external and internal turned features.
  • Only a few parts are required and Swiss-type setup costs would outweigh the production benefits.
  • The component does not require extensive cross-machining or back-side features.

Swiss Machining FAQs

Swiss CNC machining supports the bar stock close to the cutting point, reducing deflection while the material moves through a guide bushing. This makes it suitable for producing accurate components with small diameters, high length-to-diameter ratios, and closely positioned features.

Conventional turning holds the workpiece in a fixed chuck, leaving more material exposed during cutting. A Swiss-type CNC machine supports the material near the tool and can complete features on multiple sides in one cycle. This provides better control for slender parts and reduces secondary machining.

Swiss machining is commonly used for precision shafts, pins, bushings, sleeves, custom fasteners, electrical contacts, connectors, nozzles, fittings, and valve components. It is especially valuable when a part combines a narrow diameter with threads, grooves, cross holes, flats, or back-side features.

Our current Swiss CNC machining range supports bar diameters from Ø1 mm to Ø32 mm and part lengths up to 300 mm. Final feasibility depends on the material, length-to-diameter ratio, feature locations, and tolerance requirements.

Typical dimensional tolerances are ±0.01 mm, with tolerances down to ±0.005 mm achievable for selected features. Diameter, runout, concentricity, straightness, and feature-position tolerances are confirmed through drawing review.

Swiss machining is especially useful when the unsupported portion of a part would be difficult to control on a conventional lathe. There is no single ratio suitable for every design; feasibility depends on the material, final diameter, wall thickness, feature positions, and required straightness. Submit the drawing for a free DFM review rather than evaluating the overall length alone.

Many parts can leave the machine with turned, cross-machined, threaded, and back-side features already completed. Separate grinding, deburring, heat treatment, plating, or specialized finishing may still be required depending on the drawing. We identify these additional operations during the DFM review and include them in the production plan.

Avoid unnecessarily tight tolerances, extremely deep holes, sharp internal corners, long unsupported sections, and multiple non-standard thread sizes. Clearly identify critical-to-function dimensions so tighter controls are applied only where needed. Our free DFM review highlights design changes that may reduce cycle time, tooling requirements, and inspection cost.
