Design Advice

  • Feature Resolution & Nozzle Diameter: Minimum feature sizes are dictated by large nozzle diameters (typically 2-8mm). Avoid intricate details or sharp internal corners, and prioritize simplified, organic geometries that allow for continuous, high-speed extrusion paths.
  • Layer Lines & Machining Allowance: Due to large layer heights (1-5mm), a prominent “staircase effect” is inevitable. For parts requiring high-precision surfaces, design with a 3-5mm offset (extra material) to accommodate secondary CNC machining or heavy sanding.

What’s FGF 3D Printing?

FGF (Fused Granular Fabrication) is an industrial large-format 3D printing technology that uses screw extrusion to melt industrial plastic pellets instead of traditional filaments. As an upgraded extrusion-based 3D printing process, it breaks the size and cost limitations of conventional FDM printing, enabling ultra-large-scale part fabrication with high material compatibility and fast deposition speed. This robust additive manufacturing method is specially engineered for oversized tooling, heavy structural components and low-cost industrial prototype production.

Advantages of FGF 3D Printing

Our FGF 3D printing service has many advantages over traditional methods:

  • Ultra-low production cost: Adopts affordable industrial plastic pellets as raw materials, cutting 40%–70% material costs compared with FDM filament printing, ideal for budget-friendly large-scale manufacturing.
  • Massive build volume capability: Supports ultra-large part production up to several meters, perfectly catering to oversized tooling, equipment housings and large structural prototypes that standard 3D printers cannot achieve.
  • High printing efficiency: Equipped with high-speed screw extrusion systems, FGF features faster material deposition rates, greatly shortening production cycles for large and heavy-duty plastic parts.
  • Wide material compatibility: Compatible with most mainstream industrial thermoplastic pellets including PLA, ABS, PETG and carbon fiber reinforced composites, meeting diverse mechanical and environmental resistance requirements for industrial applications.

DLP 3D Printing Applications

Our FGF 3D printing services offer a wide range of applications for different types of parts:

  • Custom Industrial Tooling & Molds
  • Heavy-Duty Machinery Components
  • Automotive Large-Scale Prototypes
  • Construction & Exhibition Structures

FAQs

FGF uses affordable industrial plastic pellets instead of expensive filaments, featuring faster deposition speed and lower material costs. It specializes in ultra-large format parts, while FDM is more suitable for small and medium-sized precision structural prototypes.
Yes. FGF printing needs customized support structures for overhangs and hollow geometries to prevent structural deformation during large-scale layer extrusion. All supports can be removed and trimmed for clean part surfaces.
FGF delivers ultra-large build size, 40% lower material cost and much higher printing efficiency than traditional filament printing. It breaks material limitations and is the best solution for low-cost oversized tooling and mold prototypes.
FGF has lower printing precision and obvious layer lines, so it is not recommended for fine detailed parts, high-precision appearance components or small-size functional assemblies. Choose SLA, DLP or SLS for precision-critical parts.
